Dundee City Centre 2020

Project Type – Christmas and Art and Cultural Lighting

Client – Dundee City Council

The 3-year plus one contract was awarded in 2020 through a tender process via Public Contract Scotland. A full provision contract incorporating design, manufacture, install, switch-on, remove and maintenance of a new Christmas lighting installation for the city centre of Dundee.

Our design sources, ideas and vision were inspired by researching Dundee’s historical discoveries, design culture and forward-thinking philosophy. From radio transmission (the first wireless radio broadcast was sent from Dundee in 1832), the city’s successful shipbuilding industry and the RRS Discovery, Dundee’s current design status (the first and to date the UK’s only UNESCO City of Design), the famous V&A design museum, the innovative gaming industry and of course home of world-renowned character and comic creations by DC Thomson.

We are excited to be working with Dundee City Council once again to design and manage a new Christmas lighting installation. The pandemic’s restrictions/lockdowns in 2020 was a challenge and it meant the new designs could not be manufactured and delivered in time for celebrating Christmas 2020. The solution was to manage and work with the city’s existing Christmas lighting installation. However, new areas of the city were illuminated including trees in the city centre and trees along the newly developed waterfront, new lights for Caird Hall colonnades, and new lights for the Christmas tree. 2020 saw a beautifully shaped 45ft Christmas tree that was traditionally dressed. The new areas, the Christmas tree and the city’s Christmas light installation in general received very positive feedback and good compliments.

We have had to be patient up to this point with the pandemic situation however we are now super excited to be realising and preparing to launch production on the new designs for Christmas 2021 and cannot wait to reveal and promote the brand new Christmas lighting installation for Dundee city centre.
